TUNISIA
Tunisia was country 83 and I visited just after Christmas to make the most of the winter vacations in another country I haven't been before. The trip happened exactly a year ago and it took me a whole year to find the motivation to even start writing about trips. I didn't travel since the pandemic started, A crazy year where travelling is the last thing people should do ( even tho lots and lots of selfish people are taking risks and putting others at risk). This is what I remember from last year and the places I visited while in Tunisia.
The original plan for Tunisia was to start in Tunis to then continue to Sousse, El Jem and Hammamet. Unfortunately 3 weeks before the trip I dislocated my shoulder and travelling with a backpack was not a good idea as I had to rest it as much as possible, so Instead of cancelling the trip, I decided to stay in Tunis only and do day trips to nearby places.
MEDINA
Tunis was a great surprise ( except for the airport that was a total mess to go through and to do border formalities). The Medina of Tunis is really beautiful and compared to Morocco ( read more about my trip here) you can enjoy it without being harassed every minute. There are nice cafes with nice rooftops where you can have a great view of the city.
KSAR EZZAHRAA
This is a cafe/Restaurant I recommend going because the interiors are crazy!! I went in the morning so I was the only customer and I was able to take many pics. Of course, you need to purchase something to take pics. It was not super easy to find in the narrow roads of the Medina but after walking around the location I managed to find it
STREET ART
You can find many street art pieces around the city and in particular in this location. This is just before Tunis Marine station which is the train station that will take you to Carthage and Sidi Bou Said.
SIDI BOU SAID
I visited Sidi Bou Said as a day trip from Tunis. the train is super convenient and it takes less than 30 minutes to reach Sidi Bou Said station. This place reminded a little of Chefchaouen in Morocco because of the colours of the buildings and the blue tones but not so touristy. It is pleasant to walk around especially during a nice sunny day.
DAR EL ANNABI
I visited Dar El Annabi, it is a traditional Tunisian house now converted into a museum that showcases Tunisian traditional lifestyle.
CARTHAGE
Again another day trip from Tunis. It is the same train that takes you to Sidi Bou said but you stop a few stops before. Easy and cheap to get there from Tunis. Here you can find numerous ruins of ancient baths, theatres and villas. The bonus is the view over the Gulf of Tunis that you have from this site. I walked most of the day from ruins to ruins and they are very easy to navigate. there are tickets to be purchased to access each site ( don't remember the price as it was one year ago).
Overall my experience in Tunisia was very positive but I will have to go back one day to follow my original plan and hopefully without a dislocated shoulder.
